Sopwith 1˝ Strutter Type 9400S
Royal Hellenic Naval Air Service

Roden's 1/48 scale Sopwith 1˝ Strutter is available online from Squadron.com

Background

The model depicts Sopwith Strutter N.5249, a type 9400S ordered on 25.6.16 under Contract No C.P.119038/16 from Man Egerton & Co Ltd as their type D, powered by 110-hp Clerget 9Z.

The machine was delivered at Felixtowe store on 15.4.17, arrived at Mudros on 16.8.17, assembled there by 1.12.17. Mitylene by 1.3.18-4.18; Thasos by 6.18-1.19.

It was one of the machines that belonged to the “Z” flight operating under British command over the Aegean Sea during the First World War against the Ottoman Empire, and then handed over to the –then embryonic- Royal Hellenic Naval Air Service.

These aircraft played a very important part during the Asia Minor Campaign by granting the Hellenic Air Force supremacy. They were kept operational until the end of the campaign on August 1922.

Construction

The model was based on the Roden kit, extensively detailed in almost all areas.

The main changes included a scratch built cockpit area, dashboard, scarf ring, pitot tubing, Rotherham pump and tailskid. The Vector Clerget 110hp engine was used as well as the Part photo etched detail set.

All turnbuckles are scratched from stretched plastic tubing.
