FirstRead

Until recently, modellers only had the choice of the ancient Frog Fairey Gannet in 1/72 scale, and the good quality vacform from Dynavector in 1/48.

Now we have two high quality Gannets in 1/72 scale from Trumpeter, along with a growing list of detail sets and marking options, with the Classic Airframes 1/48 scale kits also on the horizon.

Reference on this ungainly but highly effective submarine hunter has been scarce until 4+ Publications' latest book, "Fairey Gannet - Anti-submarine and Strike Variants AS Mk.1 & AS Mk.4".

4+ Publications has earned a reputation for producing compact aircraft reference books packed with useful photos and technical information. This latest title continues the tradition.

The book commences with several pages of text describing development and the technical aspects of the Gannet, including tables containing Gannet AS. Mk.1 and Mk.4 orders and production and Foreign Operators. The meat of this book is the photographs. In common with others in the series, the book is brimming with well captioned contemporary photos. Colour content is higher than earlier titles, with five pages of colour walkaround and historical photos.

13 Gannets are featured in very attractive colour profiles, plus various plan and scrap views to illustrate particular aspects of their markings.

The body text continues out with a page of information on Gannet colours and markings. Line drawings of various cockpit configurations, antennae, lighting, the radar scanner and other details are also supplied. External and internal stores diagrams will also be very helpful for fitting out your Gannet model.

Inside a flap on the rear cover is a huge, A2 sized sheet with 1/72 scale technical drawings of the AS variants, including cross-sectional analysis, external stores, airborne equipment, internal ordnance and distinguishing features of specific operators.

The package is rounded out with an A4 foldout photo of three Gannets overflying HMS Ark Royal in October 1955.

Conclusion

The 4+ Publications book on the Gannet AS Mks.1 & 4 is a concise guide to this effective submarine hunter of the 1950s and 1960s.

The combination of contemporary photos, walkaround images, scrap drawings, profiles, technical information and plans will be ideal for modellers building a Gannet in any scale.
