Sierra Hotel Sierras is the latest release from Creighton Henthorn’s MAW Decals. This time he has moved away from his trademark F/A-18 Hornets to cover its predecessor, the F-4S Phantom II. The F-4S evolved from a program designed to extend the service life of the F-4J in Navy and Marine service pending the arrival of the Tomcat and later Hornet. Most soldiered on well into the 1980’s, with the last Marine aircraft leaving service in January 1992.

This sheet provides markings for one full colour and one lo-viz grey example of the F-4S, designed to be used with the Hasegawa 1/48 kit, but probably suitable for others. An excellent article on building (and correcting) the Hasegawa kit can be found right here on Hyperscale.

The subjects of this sheet are:

  • 7307 of VMFA-232 Red Devils as retired in November 1988. This is a former F-4J and Vietnam MiG killer and is now displayed at the Steven F Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum.

and

  • 153891 of VMFA-333 Shamrocks as it served at MCAS Beaufort NC in 1985-86. This aircraft is in a lo-viz grey tactical scheme.

MAW’s sheets are very well printed, being very thin and.  with minimal carrier film. The complex designs themselves are in perfect register. The decals are easy to use and respond well to the usual solutions without damage. Being thin they conform well to details over which they are laid. With clear and concise instructions, including colour call outs, there is little more that a modeler could wish for from these decals.

Highly Recommended.
