FirstLook

In mid-2004, Meteor Productions released a new range of high-quality, limited-edition markings under the brand name of PYN-Up Decals. The decals feature near-photographic quality continuous tone nose art markings, with standard screen-printed decals for the other markings.

The latest release in the PYN-Up range compliment the brand new Hasegawa 1/32 scale P-47D Thunderbolt, although they will be suitable for the Revell kit and Rutman conversion too.

Subjects for this release are:

  • P-47D-28-RA of 405 FG/511 FS - This is a colourful machine with nose art and a name "Dottie Mae". The engine cowl and the canopy frames are yellow, while the tail ID bands are red. Some sources state that these red bands were repainted yellow, so the modeller has that option too.

  • P-47D-28-RA of 53FG / 63FS - "Shack Rat" also features nose art. The aircraft retains invasion stripes under the fuselage, and has a red nose plus black tail ID stripes.

Both subjects may be built straight from Hasegawa's box, the -27 and -28 both having the later style non-corrugated cockpit floor as supplied in the kit.

The decal set provides a full sized conventional decal sheet plus a smaller sheet with the half tone nose art decals. In 1/32 scale, these nose art illustrations are large and impressive, with the fine half tones being very evident. Pyn-Up Decals also supply silk screen printed white backings for these half tone markings to ensure perfect colour saturation when the decals are applied to the model.

A full-colour placement guide with marking notes is also included.

Conclusion

One of the perennial challenges for aircraft modellers is the convincing depiction of nose art.

Conventional screen-printed decals exhibit a noticeable dot-screen pattern on flesh half-tones, and limited-run markings have been few and far between. The PYN-Up Decal range addresses this gap with their innovative combination of high quality components, delivering a comprehensive finishing package.

The printing of all the markings is excellent but, in particular, the flesh tones on the nose art decals must be seen to be appreciated.

If you are planning to build Hasegawa's lovely new 1/32 scale P-47D Bubbletop kit, PYN-Up Decals' latest offerings will be the perfect finishing touch. You'd better hurry though - only 300 of each PYN-Up set will be produced.

Highly Recommended.
