FirstLook

If you have not seen these sets from Eduard Model Accessories before, they are a selection of their etched metal sets, placard sets and masking sets that are applicable to a particular subject all bundled into a very large cardboard envelope and sold as a “job lot”.

Eduard has put together Big Ed sets for aircraft and armour in the main in all scales and there is even a Big Ed set for camouflage netting and the Trumpeter BR 52 w/Steifrahmentender locomotive as well.

This set, BIG4883 is intended for use on the 1/48 scale Hasegawa P-39Q/N Airacobra.  Although Eduard labels the set for use on the P-39Q and Ns you can pretty well use then for all of the Hasegawa P-39/P-400 series that they have released to date or will release in the future.

This Big Ed set provides you with the following Eduard sets:

  • FE 195 – P-39 Airacobra placards.  These are to replicate the red and black information placards that are scattered throughout the Airacobra’s cockpit.  The gun charging handles are included too.  Coloured as appropriate.  You just can’t beat these as they look just right in 1/48 scale!
  • 48554 – P39/P-400 Airacobra Landing flaps.  This set will allow you to model your Airacobra with dropped flaps.  Not for the feint hearted though as surgery is required on the kit pieces!
  • EX 200 – P-39/P-400 Airacobra Canopy masks.  Nice stuff these as it saves you a heck of a lot of time!  These are in the new yellow tape that Eduard has taken to using rather than the green vinyl ones of yesteryear.  I have found that when using these paint the part canopy you are going to mask with soapy water as it will let you slide the mask around until you are satisfied with its position then you can burnish it down.  Doesn’t seem to worry the masks at all.  Please note that I have deliberately darkened the image of the masks so as you can see what is on the sheet.
  • 49 376 P-39Q/N Airacobra.  There are two photo-etch frets in this set.  The first one is a P-39Q/N specific one as it deals with the cockpit.  Coloured instrument panels and seatbelts are provided as well as the myriad levers and wiring harnesses.  The other one carries further wiring looms as well as a set of cockpit armour, rudder pedals and bits and bobs.  The remainder of and the main strength of this fret are the undercarriage and grilles for the various intakes as well as fins and arming fuse for a pair of bombs – definitely for the devotees of etch metal this one!

Each set is accompanied by full and complete instructions to guide you through the bending, folding and application process.

If you are really into etch metal then these sets make sense as you save a fair bit of money purchasing one of the Big Ed sets rather than purchasing the sets individually.  To illustrate this, this Eduard is selling this set for USD $33.95 whereas should you purchase them individually it would cost you USD $48.80.

The frets are all packed into a nice thick cardboard envelope that will save the delicate etch metal frets from being bent in the post.

Recommended to all of the etch metal fans out there!

Thanks to Eduard for the review samples
