FirstLook

For whatever reason, general aviation and aerobatic aircraft are rarely produced as model kits.

Platz has addressed this imbalance with their newest release, a 1/72 scale Pitts Special in the colourful markings of the AIROCK Professional Aerobatic Team.

Platz's Pitts Special comprises a total 44 parts in white plastic, two parts in clear plastic and decals for three marking options. Two complete models are included. These are small but perfectly formed.

Surface details are a combination of nicely rendered fabric represented on the wings and the bulk of the fuselage, plus crisply recessed panel lines were appropriate.

Overall detail is basic, but the cockpit opening is small and it will be difficult to tell that there is no instrument panel or sidewall features. The wheels are moulded as one with the fairings.

Two alternate canopies are included - one enclosed and one windscreen alone. The clear parts are as well moulded as white.

Parts breakdown is very simple. In fact, this is probably the easiest biplane that you will ever build. The central struts are moulded in two parts that will make alignment very straightforward.

The model is moulded in white plastic, which will make painting the overall white airframe simple. Much of the white paint will be covered by the wild markings on the decal sheet.

If you like red chequers and flames, you will love these three schemes!

Conclusion

Platz's 1/72 scale Pitts Special is a gorgeous little kit that should be fast and easy to build.

I was not previously aware that Platz produced modern and aerobatic subjects. Nor did I realise that they offered any scale other than 1/144.

I am pleased to report that this modern 1/72 scale kit is just as delicately presented as their 1/144 scale WWII aircraft.

Even if you have resisted biplane kits until now, Platz's 1/72 scale Pitts Special should not present any challenges even to relatively inexperienced modellers.

Thanks to Platz for the sample
