Background

The Phantom is my most frequently modelled subject, although I am also a great fan of the “Eagle”. I do not know exactly why, but I seem to be cursed to not build a model of the F-15. Anyway…

This is Revell's 1/72 scale F-4F Phantom II, which is considered by some to be the best in this scale. For others the Hasegawa kit still beats this beauty. For me, a model is a good one when it seems as the model of that plane, but on the other hand I still try to improve the model. Not for digging in too much detail, just to colour it up a little bit.

Construction

I took this "extra colour" approach to Revell's German Phantom, especially when it came to the moulded-on detail. The fuselage and the main wing parts have the same moulding with the earlier Revell RF-4 release. Some corrections therefore have to be made to avoid a Phantom model which has the nose of an E version with the fuselage and wings of the RF.

I filled in lines that were consistent with RF version and rescribed the ones necessary for E version.

A more detailed list of modifications may be seen below:

Filling in (or erasing):

RAT door

  • Leading edge flaps

  • Night-flare doors at the rear fuselage

  • Outer wing detail lines

  • Vertical stabilizer front detail lines

  • Upper stiffeners on the elevators

Scribing:

  • New leading edge slats

  • Outer wing details

  • Detail lines, aft of air intakes

I also added small details for extra interest. Some are scratch built some are supplied from different sources.

Scratch built:

  • The scratch built parts are:

  • Pitot tube on the radome

  • Cockpit sidewalls (done by looking to Aires set, but only %60-70 could be done)

  • Wingtip aft position lamps (done by CA)

  • Canopy hydraulic lifters

  • Ejection handles (unfortunately I could only do the upper ones. The ones between the legs were somehow forgotten)

  • Small air intakes at nose area

  • Antenna on the upper fuselage

  • Pitot tube on the vertical stabilizer

  • AOA probe from 0,3 mm pencil refill

  • Formation lights by the mixing of Revell dried and powdered Night Color and Decal Making Liquid

Aftermarket and spares box parts:

  • Eduard engine nozzle set

  • Canopy set from Fujimi kit

  • Sway braces from Hasegawa kit

  • Seats from Pavla

Painting and Markings

The camouflage was finished using JPS paints for the upper fuselage and GSI fort the lower fuselage. The camouflage colours are RAL 7012, 6014 and silver. I first applied a base coat of white followed by chromate yellow.

Decals were sourced from AirDoc. Believe me or not but IMHO they are just great. Dozens of servicing decals but still the clear film around them are nearly invisible. The markings depict the plane flown at Sardinia during manoeuvres.

Weathering is done by Tamiya sets, including the bluish colour inside the nozzles.

I hope you enjoy the model.
