Hawker Sea Hawk
Trumpeter's 1/48 scale Sea Hawk is available online from Squadron
This appealing and agile aircraft was Hawker's first jet design, evolving from studies to turn the propeller driven Sea Fury into a turbine powered airplane. In the time following the armistice, project P.1040 seemed to be doomed, when the Royal Air Force showed no more interest. The design was then quickly modified for carrier operations, which led to an order for a first batch of151 “Sea Hawks”. First flown in September 1947, the type entered service in March 1953.
Until their retirement in the early 1960s, the Royal Navy Sea Hawks where used with great success in carrier based operations.
My example shows the colours of a Seahawk flown by 804 Sqn. from the carrier HMS Bulwark during operation “Musketeer” in 1956.
Trumpeter's 1/48 scale Sea Hawk kit is well designed and executed regarding the part break down and the fit of the parts. The cockpit interior is not over detailed, to say the least, and should be “pepped up” a bit. I had chosen Eduards detailing set for this job. The wings can be easily being shown folded, but in that case the folding mechanism will have to be detailed further.
The kit has no representation of the gun muzzles; there are just four shallow deepening, so you have to drill the openings. Besides that, I detailed the landing gear with copper wire and parts of the Eduard set.
The “Suez strips” have been masked and sprayed, the excellent kit decals where used for all the other markings.
All in all, this is a nice and well priced kit that gives a good basis to build a pleasing representation of this interesting and good looking carrier plane.
