P-59A Airacomet

True Details' 1/48 scale P-59A Airacomet cockpit is available online from Squadron

Description

Here is the second of two Airacomets I have recently built.

Hobbycrafts kit of the production line Airacomet is nearly the same as that of the YP-59, therefore the same is to be said of the rather mediocre fitting accuracy, the sound parts breakdown and the very poor quality of details in the cockpit area and the landing gear/ wheel wells.

As with the first P-59, I scratch build most of the cockpit interior, gave the wheel well and landing gear some additional wiring and discarded the kits gun muzzles. Instead hypothermic needles where used.

For the bare metal surface I used Alclads “White Aluminum”, “Dural” and “Aluminum”. Different shades of black under the metal-paint provided further gradations.

My model depicts P-59A "Smokey Stover", which has been used for extended cold climate tests by the 412th Fighter Group in Alaska during 1944.

If you are interested in the building process, please take a look at the JAM forum.

As ever, remarks will be appreciated: ro.sachsenhofer@gmx.at
