Description

After a very solid week or so, here is my 1/48 scale Eduard / Hasegawa / High Planes (Red Roo) CA-27 Avon Sabre.

I used the High Planes Avon Sabre conversion with Eduard's "Ultimate Sabre" reboot of Hasegawa's F-86F Sabre. I have wanted to do this conversion ever since Red Roo originally released it in 2000, and when the upgraded Eduard boxing arrived at the same time as my planned project fell through, I decided at last it was time.

The conversion comprises just four parts in rather scary looking low-pressure injection moulded plastic, but the parts are very accurate in outline and surface details are amazingly fine. You do need to be prepared to spend lots of time on preparation, test-fitting, re-adjusting, shimming and more test fitting, but in my view the end result is worth the trouble. And of course it's the only way you'll get an Aussie-built Sabre in 1/48 scale at this time.

Decals are from Model Alliance (main markings) and High Planes (for the many stencils - the fuselage looks more like a notice board than an airframe).

I'll be writing this up in detail for Issue 61 of Military Illustrated Modeller magazine.
