FirstLook

HK Models’ two 1/32 Dornier Do 335 kits, the initial Do 335 B-2 and subsequent Do 335 A release, build into imposing models that capture the hulking presence of the original aircraft.  Detail is plentiful and – within the limitations of injection moulded plastic – finely crafted.  However resin details are finer than plastic, and these two Eduard Brassin sets offer drop-fit replacements for kit parts that will visibly refine the finished model.

The first set supplies replacement exhaust stacks for the Do 335’s twin DB 603 engines.  There are 28 stacks in total – six for each engine, and four spares.  Like their plastic equivalents, each Brassin stack comes as a separate part.  These will need to be carefully removed from their shared casting blocks (there are two blocks holding six parts, and another two holding eight), and then equally carefully attached to the appropriate kit engine.  Looking at how this should happen – and the instructions are clear on placement – you’ll need to take care in correctly aligning your stacks.  Don’t rush, and use slow setting epoxy glue that allows time for adjustment.

I don’t have either of the HK Models kits handy to do a direct comparison, but I suspect the Brassin stacks compare very well in terms of detail.  The ends of the stacks are hollowed out, and a weld seam has been cast on the outside surface of each.  With careful assembly, painting and weathering, these parts will add considerable finesse to your Pfeil engines.

The second set is much simpler, and consists of two perforated muzzle brakes for the MK 103 wing cannons of HK Models Do 335 B-2 kit.

The brakes are quite delicate, and care will be needed to remove them from their casting blocks without damage.  However once you’ve done this, you can simply glue them in place on the tips of the kit’s plastic gun barrels.

Conclusion

These two inexpensive sets will subtly improve the look of your chosen HK Models Do 335 kit.  They are well produced, reasonably easy to use, and highly recommended.

Thanks to Eduard for the samples and images.
