Flawless resin casting; simple assembly; clear instructions and colour guide, choice of modelling GBU-16s with seeker-heads exposed or capped as seen on the ground; decals.

Disadvantages:

None noted.

Recommendation:

Looking to hang some laser guided munitions under that OEF Bombcat, perhaps your Superhornet or any number of NATO bomb-trucks, this resin set may be for you. Beautifully cast, and straight forward to assemble, these resin 1000 pounders will be easier to paint and assemble than most injection molded equivalents. Recommended.

Background

The GBU-16 Paveway II is a laser-guided bomb, based on the Mk 83 general-purpose bomb, but with laser seeker and wings for guidance. It was introduced into service around 1976. It is used by USAF, US Navy, US Marine Corps, and various NATO air forces. It uses a 1,000 pound general purpose warhead.

The bomb in the GBU-16 Paveway II is a 1,000 pound Mk 83 bomb.

According to the manufacturer’s fact sheet for the PAVEWAY 2, 99 deliveries of guided munitions will yield a circular error probable(CEP) of only 3.6 feet, versus a CEP of 310 feet for 99 unguided bombs dropped under similar conditions.*

FirstLook

A simple resin weapons set from Eduard to improve the look of that jet you’re building. As the GBU-16 has been fitted to a variety of aircraft, this set will come in handy for any number of projects.

Parts appear beautifully cast and well detailed. Eduard offer a choice, you can model with the seeker heads exposed or capped as you would typically see them before flight. Seeker heads are cast separately so you can pose them appropriately. Most reference photos show them pointing in the same direction towards the ground.

The bomb casing is molded without an ablative coating, you may need to add this distinctive textured finish yourself if you plan to hang these under a Navy jet. Reference photographs abound on the internet, and are worth studying. For those who really enjoy detailing their weapons, there are plenty of options to depict GBU-16s with mis-matching guidance kits, scuffed and faded bomb-casings and even graffiti so check your references

Recommended.

Thanks to Eduard for the samples and images.
