Review Type:

First Look.

Advantages:

Superb quality, low parts count and simple fit.

Disadvantages:

None apparent.

Conclusion:

This is a superb cockpit set; not just for its detail, but also its low parts count and simplicity of installation.

Costing more than the Weekend Edition, and the same as a Profipack Edition, I think it is worth every penny as Eduard’s kit prices are very competitive to begin with.

However, the kits are so good we are potentially ‘gilding the lily’ with this set, but then that is often the case when we seek that elusive modelling goal of perfection.

Highly Recommended.

Eduard Brassin’s 1/72 MiG-15UTI Cockpit is available online from Squadron.com

FirstLook

This set provides a replacement multi-media csockpit for any of the MiG-15UTI boxings released so far by Eduard; all three of which I have previously reviewed here on HyperScale - Weekend Edition, Profipack Edition, and Quattro Combo Royal Class.

It probably makes the most sense to combine it with the Weekend Edition that offers the basic kit without additional features like colour red PE and a paint mask (as found in the Profipack and Royal Class editions). However, the coloured PE frets provided with these more expensive editions include coloured PE instrument panels, which is something the Brassin cockpit set does not offer.

The cockpit set comes packed in a clear blister pack with foam cushioning protecting the coloured resin parts, whilst the clear resin gun-sight is packed in a resealable plastic bag slipped inside the printed instructions. The PE fret is held in place by taped black backing paper.

The four pages of instructions are also downloadable as a PDF from Eduard’s website; to view these please click here. They are clear and easy to follow, and include colour call-outs keyed to the Gunze Sangyo Aqueous & Mr. Color paint.

All of the parts are cast beautifully with easily removed casting blocks. There are surprisingly few pieces considering the wealth of detail incorporated.

The instrument faces are cast in resin and look very good, with a more realistic 3D appearance than PE; but they need skilful painting to look better overall than coloured PE. I can imagine some modellers preferring the coloured PE panels provided with the Profipack Edition, or available separately in a PE cockpit detail set as Item # SS537. I guess Eduard ahs to draw the line somewhere, but the inclusion of the Coloured PE panels with this Brassin set would have been a nice option to have.

The PE fret is of the highest quality too, and provides seat harnesses, rudder pedal straps, rear canopy structure, and some wiring and plumbing detail on the control columns and rear side consoles.

The resin cockpit is almost a drop-in fit, with the surgery to the kit indicated as some minor trimming to the front-seat’s coaming and the decking behind the rear-seat.

Eduard’s CAD illustrations, my photo image of the actual parts, and the downloadable instructions should provide readers with almost all they need to about the contents.
