Red Roo Models has released two decal sets, in 1/72 and 1/48 scales, covering RAAF Mustangs serving with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan.

The BCOF served there from February 1946 until occupation ended in 1952. The RAAF mainly supported the RAN in preventing illegal people trafficking across the Inland Sea between Korea and Japan, and conducted surveillance of prefectures within the BCOF zone to locate leftover weapons and ordnance.

The contents and subjects in the 1/72 and 1/48 scale sets are essentially the same. The main decal sheet and instructions are supplied in a large polythene zip-lock bag, with a much smaller bag containing three small errata sheets.

The instructions are nicely produced in colour and consist of eight pages. They include a brief history of the BCOF, a comment on changes to national insignia over the period of occupation, and advice on applying the decals. Markings placement is clearly indicated in the profile and plan views provided, and colour keys use generic names.

A brief note regarding propeller style fitted and other comments regarding finish etc accompanies each subject profile. The instructions also list Red Roo accessories, like a cuffless paddle propeller, applicable to some of the subjects covered.

Unlike many decals sets, these provide sufficient national insignia for all subjects covered (making it ideal for a group buy) in both the 1/72 and 1/48 scale sets.

The decals appear superbly printed with excellent colour density and registration.

The specific RAAF subjects covered are:

  • A68-722, A, 76 Sqn,

  • A68-738, SV-P, 76 Sqn,

  • A68-751, SV-U, 76 Sqn,

  • A68-700, AM-A, 77 Sqn,

  • A68-724, K, 77 Sqn,
