FirstLook

Bronco has just released a brand new, if somewhat flawed, 1/48 scale P-40C kit, and Airfix will be releasing their all-new kit in August.

Xtradecal is also jumping on the Tomahawk bandwagon with two new decal sheets that will be appropriate for either kit, or indeed the older Monogram and Hobbycraft offerings.

Tonight I am reviewing "Early Curtiss P-40s Pt.1". This instalment covers six varied aircraft in RAF, USAAC and VVS service.

Details are as follows:

  • RAF

    • Tomahawk Mk.IIA AH893 RM-D 26 Sqn RAF Gatwick 1941 finished in Du Pont equivalents of Dark Green and Dark Earth on the upper surfaces and Du Pont Sky Grey on the lower surfaces. Night (black) lower port wing and a large letter "D" on the lower starboard wing. Small black letter "M" under nose. Sky spinner and 18" fuselage band. Yellow wing leading edge stripes.

    • Tomahawk Mk.IIA AK960 73Sqn S/Ldr P.Wykeham-Barnes, Egypt 1941finished in Du Pont equivalents of Dark Green and Dark Earth on the upper surfaces and DuPont Sky Grey on the lower surfaces. Sky spinner. Yellow wing leading edge stripes.

  • USAAC

    • P-40 (or P-40-CU) 20P100 55th PS 20th PG Hamilton Field CA 1940 finished in Olive Drab upper surfaces and Neutral Grey below. White spinner and two narrow fuselage bands (you'll have to paint these, which I would do even if decals were supplied).

    • P-40C 9184 X-804 Advanced Aerobatic Unit Luke Field AZ 194 finished in Olive Drab upper surfaces and Neutral Grey below. Yellow nose band.

  • Russia

    • P-40C 41-13390 53 20th Guards Fighter Regt Murmansk 1942 finished in a hybrid scheme of Du Pont Dark Earth and Dark Green on the engine cowlings with Olive Drab and Neutral Grey elsewhere. Olive Drab spinner. Xtradecal provides oversized red stripes for the rudder designed to be trimmed, which should ensure that they will fit any of the kits.

    • P-40C AH965 Moscow Air Defence Capt R.S.Grigorievch 1941-2.

One full set of national markings are supplied each for RAF, USAAC and VVS.

Instructions for the decal sheet are in full colour one folded double-sided A4 sheet plus a single A5 cover sheet. Both side plus upper and lower views are provided for all six aircraft. Stencils are not included.

Colour notes are supplied, along with model paint callouts for Xtracolor enamels and Xtracrylix acrylics.

The decals are beautifully printed and feature thin carrier film.

This release offers some interesting and colourful options for those building any 1/48 scale P-40B / C / Tomahawk kit.

Highly Recommended.

Thanks to Hannants for the review sample
