FirstLook

Bronco has just released a brand new, if somewhat flawed, 1/48 scale P-40C kit, and Airfix will be releasing their all-new kit in August.

Xtradecal is also jumping on the Tomahawk bandwagon with two new decal sheets that will be appropriate for either kit, or indeed the older Monogram and Hobbycraft offerings.

Tonight I am reviewing "Early Curtiss P-40s Pt.2". This instalment covers six varied aircraft in RAF, USAAC Turkish and Egyptian service.

Details are as follows:

  • RAF

    • Tomahawk Mk.IIB - AK578 GA-V P/Off Neville Duke 112 Sqn Egypt 1942 with shark mouth; finished in Middle Stone and Dark Earth upper surfaces with Azure Blue below. Red spinner and yellow wing leading edge stripes.
    • Tomahawk Mk.IIA - AH940 XV-U 2 Sqn RAF Sawbridge 1941; finished in Du Pont equivalents of Dark Green and Dark Earth on the upper surfaces and Du Pont Sky Grey on the lower surfaces. Sky spinner and 18" fuselage band. Yellow wing leading edge stripes. Red tip on spinner.

    • Tomahawk Mk.IIA - AH822 PB-F 1683(Bomber Defence Training) Flight RAF Bruntingthorpe 1944; finished in Dark Green and Ocean Grey upper surfaces and Medium Sea Grey below.

  • USAAC

    • P-40C 9754P 54 Pursuit Sqn 1942; finished in Olive Drab upper surfaces, Neutral Grey below and a yellow spinner.

  • Turkish Air Force

    • P-40B White 6 1942;finished in Du Pont equivalents of Dark Green and Dark Earth on the upper surfaces and Du Pont Sky Grey on the lower surfaces. White spinner and red rudder

  • Royal Egyptian Air Force

    • Tomahawk Mk.IIb 1942; finished in Middle Stone and Dark Earth upper surfaces with Azure Blue below. Red spinner and yellow wing leading edge stripes.

One full set of national markings are supplied each for RAF, USAAC Turkey and Egypt.

Instructions for the decal sheet are in full colour one folded double-sided A4 sheet plus a single A5 cover sheet. Both side plus upper and lower views are provided for all six aircraft. Stencils are not included.

Colour notes are supplied, along with model paint callouts for Xtracolor enamels and Xtracrylix acrylics.

The decals are beautifully printed and feature thin carrier film.

This release offers some interesting and colourful options for those building any 1/48 scale P-40B / C / Tomahawk kit.

Highly Recommended.

Thanks to Hannants for the review sample
