Iliad Design of Canada has released a new 1/48 scale decal sheet for one of the most popular subjects in the history of aircraft modelling - the Messerschmitt Bf 109 E.

The twist in this case is that all six subjects are fighter-bombers.

Five Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-4/Bs and one Bf 109 E-7/B are covered on the sheet. They are finished in a nice variety of camouflage schemes:

  • White U, Bf 109 E-4/B, II./SG 1, Russia 1942, finished in RLM 02, RLM 74 Grey Green and RLM 75 Grey Violet over RLM 76 Light Blue with yellow cowl and rear fuselage band.

  • S9+DR, Bf 109 E-7/Trop of 7/ZG 1 near El Alamein, August 1942. Finishd in RLM Sand Yellow and RLM 78 Light Blue with white fuselage band and wing tips. The starboard wing is a replacement finished in RLM 71 / 02 / 65.

  • Red A, Bf 109 E-4/B, II.(Sch)/LG 2, Russia 1941, finished in RLM 02, RLM 74 Grey Green and RLM 75 Grey Violet over RLM 76 Light Blue with yellow cowl, rudder and rear fuselage band.

  • White C, Bf 109 E-4/B of II./LG2, Russia 1941, finished in RLM 02 Grey and RLM 71 Dark Green upper surfaces over RLM 65 Light Blue lower surfaces. Spinner and rudder are yellow, and there is an unusually positioned yellow fuselage band too.

  • Yellow H, Bf 109 E-4/B of 6 (Sch )/LG2, France 1940, finished in RLM 02 Grey and RLM 71 Dark Green upper surfaces over RLM 65 Light Blue lower surfaces. Cowl and rudder are yellow.

  • Black M, Bf 109 E-4/B of 5 (Sch) /LG2, Russia 1941, finished in RLM 02 Grey and RLM 71 Dark Green upper surfaces over RLM 65 Light Blue lower surfaces. Cowl and rudder are yellow.

In the case of the two subjects called out as RLM 74 / 75 Greys, I think it is just as likely that they were finished in their original camouflage of RLM 02 Grey, RLM 71 Dark Green and RLM 65 Light Blue. I

Instructions are offered over a folded A4 sheet in full colour, with one side plus upper and lower views plus detailed notes on the application of the decals over features such as the undercarriage doors and the intercooler outlets.

Decals are printed perfectly on my sample, and colours look good.

These are six interesting subjects for your 1/48 scale Emils.

Thanks to Iliad Design for the review sample.
