S u m m a r y

Item No. Kinetic Model Kits Item No. K48074 - Grumman S-2A/E/G Tracker
Contents and Media: More than 220 parts in grey plastic and ten parts in clear; markings for three aircraft.
Scale 1/48
Price: USD$49.99 plus shipping available online from Lucky Model
Review Type: FirstLook
Advantages: High quality moulding; finely recessed panel lines; optional position wings (extended or folded) with no cutting required; entry door and bomb bay doors may be posed open; clear parts moulded to accurately depict canopy bulges; straightforward parts breakdown; improved packaging (sprues in multiple plastic bags); high quality decals produced by Fightertown Decals.
Disadvantages: Simplified interior; lack of detail on searchlight; missing landing light.
Recommendation:

In summary, this is a fairly accurate and detailed Tracker that allows the modeller to build any version flown by the ROCAF, it looks impressive and has an exception wing fold.  The kit is an exceptional build and the finished model will look great in particular with the wings folded.

The Kinetic Tracker comes in quite a large box and has over 220 grey plastic parts and 10 clear parts.  An in-box review was conducted by Brett Green earlier on Hyperscale a few years ago

This release is dedicated to the Republic of China Air Force or, if you prefer, Taiwanese Air Force.  The kit comes with both the short S-2A and the longer S-2E fuselage allowing you to build all versions flown by Taiwan.

The wings come with an option to fold the wings and both the short S-2A and the longer S-2E wings are provided.  Different engine nacelles and tail planes are also included for both versions leaving 4 common sprues for the undercarriage, weapons, cockpit and wing folds.  As with the earlier releases the moulding is excellent and well defined.  The included wing fold detail looks excellent without needing to be replaced by expensive aftermarket detail sets.

A nice array of weapons has been included ranging from torpedoes, depth charges to underwing rocket pods.  The transparencies are crystal clear and will allow a view of the nicely detailed cockpit.

From my assessment the detail in the kit will suffice for the average modeller without the need for extensive etched metal detail.  The bomb bay, engines and undercarriage are possibly the only areas that could benefit from extra detailing but overall it is a well detailed kit.

Markings

The decals look nice and thin and are printed by Cartograf of Italy.

Markings are provided for 5 aircraft as follows.

  • Two Grumman Tracker S-2E in the Sea Camouflage scheme of FS25042 Sea Blue and FS36375 Light Compass Ghost grey upper surfaces and white under surfaces.

  • Two Grumman Tracker S-2E in the Grey Camouflage scheme of FS36622 Grey upper surfaces and white under surfaces.

  • One Grumman Tracker S-2A in the Grey Camouflage scheme of FS36622 Grey upper surfaces and white under surfaces.

Conclusion

In summary, this is a fairly accurate and detailed Tracker that allows the modeller to build any version flown by the ROCAF, it looks impressive and has an exception wing fold.  The kit is an exceptional build and the finished model will look great in particular with the wings folded.

Thanks to Lucky Model for the samples
