Advantages: Includes new no-insert filletless fuselage; very high level of detail; state-of-the-art surface textures; many useful options (although most not applying to this early D-5 variant) including three styles of propeller, three styles of canopy, three different carburettor air filter panels, two styles of fin fillet, choice of metal and fabric elevators, two seat options, large range of ordnance, aerials, avionics and more; high level of attention to detail.
Disadvantages:

Conclusion:

Eduard has delivered a real winner with their all-new 1/48 scale P-51D Mustang family.

The recent Limited Edition Chattanooga Choo Choo kit was fabulous, but Eduard has raised the bar even higher with this forthcoming release by including a no-insert filletless fuselage.

If you missed out on the Limited Edition kit this month, you'll be able to snap up this little beauty in October. In fact, even if you did score the Chattanooga Choo Choo release, you'll probably want to add this one to the collection too!

FirstLook

As its all-new 1/48 scale Mustang family debut, Eduard released a Limited Edition "Chattanoooga Choo Choo" P-51D-5 (late version) to coincide with the 2019 IPMS USA Nationals.

Eduard very quickly sold out of this kit, although some retailers and online stores may still have stock.

Fear not though, melancholy modellers, for Eduard will release their ProfiPACK version of the kit in October.

The October release will differ in just a couple of ways.

It will include a new fuselage moulded without a fin fillet. This will enable the modeller to build an early P-51D-5. Please note that this is a totally new fuselage and the filletless tail is moulded without the need for a separate insert.

Eduard has also paid close attention to detail. In addition to the filletless configuration, Eduard has moulded the angle of incidence of the horizontal stabilisers at 2 degrees on this model compared to 0.5 degrees on the later version fuselage.

Here's a comparison of the two kit fuselages. The filletless tail with the higher angle of attack is at the top of the photo below.

They have also deleted a scoop on the forward fuselage and a small square panel just forward of the windscreen on the port side fuselage half.

In most other respects, the kits will be the same - which is a most definitely a good thing.

The early P-51D-5 kit will have around 265 parts in grey plastic, 17 parts in clear, a colour photo-etched fret, die-cut self-adhesive masks and decals for six marking options.

For details of the plastic and photo-etched parts, please refer to my recent review of the Limited Edition boxing.

Markings

Markings are supplied for six nicely varied early D-5 aircraft.

Here is the artwork for all six as supplied by Eduard:

The decals will be printed by Eduard
