Revell's classic 1/32 scale
Curtiss P-40E Warhawk

by Tadeu Pinto Mendes

Curtiss P-40E Warhawk

Description

The P-40 was one of the most outstanding fighters of World War II. Despite not being up to par with German fighters, it was sent to Asia and the Pacific where it fared better against Japanese fighters.

Several allied countries used this fighter, including the Brazilian air force, which had a total of 89 P-40s in E, K, M and N versions. In the first version received, it was designated in the USAAF as P-40E-1.

There were only 6 units and were based in coastal areas to do patrols and even attacks against german and italian submarines.

These P-40E were used from 1942 to 53 and initially numbered 01 to 06 and later 4020 to 25.

Assembly

This model was first released in the US in the 1960s. It then came with movable wing and tail parts. With good details on the cabin interior and engine, overall it's a great model considering its age.

What I acquired was injected by the German Revell coming to be made from the USAAF, in this case the pilot Robert Lee Scott Jr.

Painting

The painting of the P-40E in the Brazilian air force is not known for sure if they all came in the same painting, or if they had variations, from which it was reported that some would have come in the painting used by the RAF in the Mediterranean area.

According to in-depth research, the examples that arrived in Brazil would have come in USAAF colors that were closer to the RAF, where they would be destined. In this case they would be in Brown - FS 30279 and Dark Green - FS 34092 in the dorsal parts. Ventrals in Pastel Blue - FS 34672.

I chose to make 04, which also had the spinner in two colors, most likely in Red and White.

When received by the Brazilian air force, they came with USAAF insignia which were painted with newer paint over the blue and the FAB star over the USAAF. Under the right wing it was probably painted white over the American insignia.
