Grumman F9F-5 Panther

Monogram's 1/48 scale F9F-5 Panther (with a book) is available online from Squadron.com

Description

With Monogram's imminent re-release of their 1/48 scale F9F-5 Panther I thought I would share one of the many options available to dress this wonderful older kit. I've always liked the unique markings of "Blue Tail Fly" of VF-153 aboard the USS Princeton, 1953.

I built this subject last year after I managed to acquire the kit and an old Superscale decal sheet from Bob Richards, a frequent visitor to HyperScale's Discussion Forum.

The kit was built straight from the box with no major problems encountered. Seatbelts were fashioned from lead foil and Eduard buckles.

The subject was painted with a base coat of SnJ Metalizer. Various panels were then masked and shot with Alclad I and Model Master Metalizers. The rear section of the fuselage received a coat of Model Master Gloss Sea Blue.

Because of the gloss finish, decals were applied directly to the subject. After the markings on the rear section dried, the decals were sealed with a light misting of Future.

This is one of many older Monogram kits that have managed to stand the test of time. Hopefully the re-release of this subject will inspire one or more of the after market decal companies to release sets of interesting alternative markings.
