Supermarine Spitfire VIII

by Jon Freeman

Supermarine Spitfire Mk. VIII
85 Sqn. RAAF, New Guinea, 1944

Hasegawa's 1/48 scale Spitfire VIII is now available online from Squadron.com

Description

Hasegawas' beautiful 1/48 scale Spitfire MkIXc Spitfire has the components in the box to make a MkVIII so I built a RAAF machine from 85 Sqn which was tasked with mopping up operations over New Guinea 1944.

I utilised Halfords Nissan Silver Auto spray paint and Alclad II for the finish with the White tail painted in Aeromaster White (Yes I still have some left!).

The kit itself has some minor inaccuracies (ie. nose 3.5mm too short in length and the fuselage near the tail not being deep enough by a hair's width). Also note that the two bulges on the wings are from the modern warbird spit that Hasesgawa took dimensions from so they will need to be sanded off.(Which I later found out to my annoyance) but what the hell - it certainly looks like a late Merlin engined Spitfire!

I have only three more in the loft to make now but I'm sure that I will indulge very soon...Anyone for a PRU Pink LFIXc?

P.S the kit decals are wrong for the kit i.e. 316 Sqn never operated late series Mk.IXcs and the serial NH214 was a Mk.IXe and served with 302 Polish Sqn.

The other option although correct in serial etc needs a Mk.XVI wing alas there is not the parts or options to change the armament around for this marque in the kit.
