Description

Here are two pictures of my Tamiya 1/32 scale F-4J Phantom taken at one of our Auckland (NZ) IPMS meetings (thanks to Craig Sargent for the shots).

The Phantom is finished as "Silverkite 211" of VF-92 (Silverkings) from USS Constellation, in which Lt Curt 'Doso' Dose & LtCdr Jim 'Routeslip' McDevitt achieved a Mig kill over Kep Airfield near Hanoi on 10 May 1972. I have a framed print by Phillip West of this aircraft (titled "Silverkite 211") on final approach to the carrier following this mission, and this inspired me to obtain the Fox One decals for this aircraft.

I used the Eduard PE set for this model which is well worth the extra cost and adds quite a bit to an already awesome kit. Seats are the kit items with harnesses added from the Eduard set. The kit nozzles were replaced with Cutting edge ones which looked marginally better. The only criticism of the Tamiya Phantom kits (and I know this has already been said many times), is the intakes but I took the easy way out using Reheat FOD guards, which fit like a glove, no glue needed. I also found the red adds a striking bit of colour to the model. Paints used were Tamiya enamels and Xtracolour light gull grey which looks just right. Testors and Humbrol metalizers were used around the tail area. Light weathering was carried out using inks in the panel lines and some pastel streaking. I wanted it to look clean without being pristine.

I bought the kit on special for NZ$99 (about US$46) but by the time I bought all the aftermarket goodies it was probably back up to it's original price.... I think the term is AMS....Hmmmm.
