FirstLook

When I reviewed FAA's Gannet Weapons Bay a few months ago, I remarked that it would have been nice to also supply some weapons. Well, here they are. Not that I am for a second suggesting they did them because of my remark -  I think they were intended all along.

FAA Models supplies two Mk 30  18” Torpedoes, a set of  five Sonar Buoys on their mount and a mounting block for the two Torpedoes. They are all nicely cast in light grey resin with very good detail and not a pin hole in sight. The two torpedoes and sonar buoys have casting blocks that will have to be removed and there is a small amount of flash on the latter as well. Nothing of any concern there for the modeller familiar with resin.

The instructions do not include any colour recommendations. I would assume that the torpedoes would be something like dark green and the buoys an orange, yellow or red but I don't know and before I build them, I am going to have to find out. FAA have obviously done some research to replicate the detail on their castings. A little more would have revealed the appropriate colours.

Step One in the instructions advise: “Clip torpedo mounting block to transverse spar in front part of bomb bay”. Mine didn't seem to want to “clip” in. It just wanted to slip to the left or right. On further close inspection of the underside, I noticed a small imperfection where the mount fits over two longitudinal rails on the roof of the bay. I attacked this with a small points file and then tried to fit it again. Eureka! It fitted perfectly. I don't know if this small dag is on all of the sets, but it didn't take much to fix.

FAA Models' Gannet Weapons Set is a welcome addition to Trumpeter's very nice model.
