Tamiya's 1/48 scale Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 is an undeniably gorgeous kit, but straight from the box it may only be built as an early to mid-production aircraft from the Messerschmitt Regensburg factory. The model features the early framed canopy, the short tail and the standard stowage compartment behind the pilot's head. The only options in the kit are a tropical filter and MG 151/20 cannon in wing gondolas to represent the Bf 109 G-6/R6 variant.

Barracuda Studios has released a simple resin conversion set to permit a wider selection of Bf 109 G-5, G-6 and G-14 variants to be built from the Tamiya kit.

Five perfectly cast resin parts are included.

These include two styles of tall replacement rudder and corresponding tall fin. These were often seen on late production Bf 109 G-6s and the Bf 109 G-14. One of these features a conventional trim tab flush with the trailing edge and a rounded bottom corner. The second rudder is fitted with two external Flettner tabs and a squared-off bottom corner.

You will also be able to modify the second rudder to represent other versions by trimming off various tabs and/or sanding/filling the fabric strip detail to represent the simplified wooden rudder.

The small bulge that accommodated the compressor fitted to the starboard buele of Erla-built G-5s and some G-6s is included too.

The set is rounded out with the angular battery box cover fitted behind the pilot's head.

Preparation of the parts will be simple. Remove the parts with a new hobby blade and tidy up any remnants with a sanding stick.

Check your references carefully and you'll be able to depict a wider range of Gustav variants.
