FirstRead

Ray Rimell needs no introduction to any WWI modeller as he has been a stalwart of the genre for  as far back as I remember, particularly with the larger scale replicas, while Richard Alexander was the former General Manager of WingNut Wings (WNW) before it's unfortunate demise.

The roles of both of these gentlemen in bringing to fruition the wonderful 1/32 kits of the iconic Fokker triplanes in 2020 and 2021 under the Meng label is explained and acknowledged inside the front cover of this 76-page bookazine. This publication is printed in full colour on A4 glossy pages with a slightly thicker gloss card cover. The production is associated with Windsock Datafile, from whom it is available at www.windsockdatafilespecials.co.uk , along with any other outlets.

An enormous amount of information in both text and images is contained in this volume, which follows from Volume 1, released in early 2022. There is no preamble as that was covered in the earlier volume, but goes straight into detailed builds :-

There follows sections on:-

  1. Fokker F.I. 103/17 23 September 1917 - an upgrade of the WNW kit to represent Verner Voss’ mount on this date and in a suitable diorama

  2. Dreideckers by Numbers - 19 new colour profiles from Ronny Bar,

  3. a very detailed Meng 1/32 build of Fokker DR.I. 204/17 by Ray Rimell,

  4. colour photos of the TVAL rotary engine built for the replicas they have built,

  5. builds of DR.I. 425/17 from 21 April 1918 and 574/17 in summer 1018 both in 1/32,

  6. a photo album of images from Jasta 14,

  7. a build of DR.I. 588/17 on 9th June 1918,

  8. Fokker DR.I. Folio of more timeless images, and

  9. an Addenda from Volume 1 with new kit information and reader’s contributions and photos.

All construction photos are clear and to a useful size with great notion to help the builder.

The excellent colour renditions throughout the book are by Ronny Bar and Australia’s own Juanita Franzi.

Conclusion

This and the first volume are great resources for the large scale kit builder and comes very highly recommended, and the small scale modeller will have ample inspiration to turn one of Roden’s little gems into a world beater.

Thanks to Albatros Productions for the review sample.
