F4U-1A Corsair
VMF-321, Guam, August 1944 |
This small-scale Corsair represents the aircraft flown by 1st Lt. Robert Whiting of VMF-321. The build incorporates Eduard photo-etch details, especially in the cockpit, along with a Squadron vac-form canopy. The wheels are Eduard aftermarket, and I added hydraulic lines and thinned down the gear doors for better scale realism.

Painted with Vallejo Air acrylics, I avoided pre-shading and instead used tonal variations of blue to bring life to the upper surfaces. Markings were airbrushed using Montex masks.

Chipping was done with a Prismacolor silver pencil based on photo references, while fuel staining was achieved using highly diluted watercolor filters.

I also tried to replicate the stressed-skin effect — subtle, but still visible under certain lighting.
A small detail that, in my opinion, gives the model a bit more character.
