FirstLook

Mini Craft Collection (MCC) is a relatively new company from China that has focused primarily on 3D-printed seats and accessories for U.S. military jet aircraft.

MCC has just released two 1/48 scale replacement canopy frame sets - one for the Tamiya F-14A/B kits and one for the Tamiya F-14D kit.

The sets are substantially similar but there are some differences as reflected by the two different product numbers. I will be working on the F-14A/B set for this review.

The set arrives in a sturdy silver tin protected by a cardboard slip cover. Inside, the resin parts are safely housed in five individual resin enclosures.

A total of eight 3 d printed resin parts are provided, all crisply rendered in grey 3D-printed resin. Each part is attached to a fine lattice of supports that taper to hair-thin contact points. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of these to remove. I recommend using a fresh hobby blade for the finer supports and a razor saw for the larger gates and protective frames.

Printing quality is flawless — there are no striations, layer lines, or other surface imperfections.

Each set comprises top side cockpit detail, one-piece canopy frame including mirrors printed in place, windscreen frame and a couple of smaller parts. A spare mirror is supplied in case one of yours pings off onto the plush pile carpet - nice touch.

A one-sided A4 instruction sheet is included, offering clear assembly diagrams and guidance on preparing the Tamiya kit parts to accept the new canopy frames.

A small amount of cutting and trimming is required, but nothing that will trouble any moderately experienced.

These are high-quality and well-detailed upgrades for Tamiya's’s excellent 1/48 scale F-14A/B and D kits.

Thanks to Mini Craft Collection for the sample.
