Phil Listemann's SQUADRONS! series has earned a well-deserved reputation for documenting the operational histories of individual RAF and Commonwealth squadrons in a concise, accessible format. Rather than attempting to produce an all-encompassing history of an aircraft type, each volume focuses on the units that flew it, combining operational narratives with photographs, colour profiles and biographical information.

 

 

The Hawker Typhoon: The Expansion examines a pivotal stage in the development of Hawker's powerful fighter-bomber. Following the Typhoon's difficult introduction to service, the aircraft steadily matured into one of the RAF's most effective tactical weapons. This volume concentrates on the expansion of Typhoon operations during the second half of 1942, covering Nos. 181, 182, 183, 195, 197 and 198 Squadrons as the type became firmly established within the RAF's growing fighter-bomber force.

 

 

The operational narrative traces the evolution of these units from formation through training and operational conversion before following their increasing involvement in offensive operations. Listemann places the squadrons into their wider operational context while maintaining the unit-level focus that has become a hallmark of the series.

Illustration is one of the book's strengths. Around 100 well-chosen black-and-white photographs are complemented by 20 full-colour profile illustrations that provide useful references for historians and modellers alike. Production values are consistent with earlier titles in the series. The layout is clean and easy to follow, allowing the text and illustrations to work together without distraction. Although compact, the book succeeds in presenting a wealth of operational information in an easily digestible format.
