Iliad Design has carved out a niche for itself by offering subjects that sit just outside the mainstream, and this new release, Silver Spitfires, is a perfect example of that philosophy in action.
The Supermarine Spitfire is most often associated with the classic camouflage of Dark Green and Ocean Grey, but the natural metal and aluminium-painted finishes featured on this sheet present a refreshing alternative. Iliad has wisely focused on this less-travelled path, delivering a collection that will immediately stand out in any display cabinet.
This 1:48 scale release provides markings for a selection of late-war and post-war Spitfires, including Mk.Vc, Mk.IXc and Mk.XVI variants in a mix of RAF, USAAF and RAAF service.

The inclusion of an Australian aircraft—A58-137 of No. 85 Squadron, RAAF—is particularly appealing, adding a local flavour that will resonate with many modellers. The schemes themselves are well chosen. Natural metal finishes can sometimes appear monotonous, but Iliad has avoided this trap by selecting aircraft with subtle variations—some are left in bare metal, while others are finished in aluminium paint. This distinction is more significant than it might first appear, offering modellers the opportunity to explore different finishing techniques without straying too far from a cohesive theme.
Printing quality is, as we have come to expect from Iliad Design, first rate. The decals are sharply defined, with excellent register and solid colour density. National markings and serials are cleanly executed, and the finer details hold up well under close inspection. Carrier film appears minimal, which should help the decals settle convincingly over the Spitfire’s subtle surface detail.
The instruction sheet is clear and functional, presenting each option in colour with logical placement guides. Iliad’s emphasis on research is evident here; the notes accompanying the schemes provide useful context without overwhelming the modeller.

From a practical standpoint, this sheet offers more than just visual appeal. Natural metal Spitfires can be notoriously unforgiving, but Iliad’s inclusion of aluminium-painted subjects provides a more accessible entry point for those less confident with high-shine finishes—a thoughtful touch that broadens the set’s appeal.
In summary, Iliad Design’s Silver Spitfires is an imaginative and well-executed decal sheet that combines unusual subject matter with high production standards. For anyone looking to build something just a little different from the usual camouflaged Spitfire, this set delivers both inspiration and quality in equal measure.
