David Doyle Books News #60
A Mix of Good and Bad News
Dear Friends,
Denise and I - like so many others - are dealing with heat indexes in the 100-teens. Even though the shipping department (aka - garage) is air conditioned, getting the books in and out in this heat is exhausting for an old fat man like myself. I am thankful that I don't have to do the strenuous labor of so many in the heat, ranging from my UPS delivery man to the guys on the paving crews nearby. Denise and I hope all of you are staying hydrated and as cool as possible.
It was announced a few days ago that Mr. Shunsaku Tamiya, chairman of the model company with his name, has passed away. Though the company had been founded by his father, S. Tamiya had been heavily involved from the mid-1960s, especially with the production of armor models. For those less interested in models than preservation, it should be noted that one of the exhibit halls at the Tank Museum, Bovington, is Tamiya Hall, as a result of his interests and a donation by the firm.
As many of you know, from time to time I provide research assistance to various model firms - Tamiya included. These firms kindly send us models - most of which we give away (like the M36, the winner of which is announced later in this newsletter) - but some of these models I keep, even though I lack the skills to build them. One of my most cherished is a Tamiya P-38 kit, which S. Tamiya himself autographed. As I see it today, it is especially meaningful.
Speaking of autographs, our stock of the expanded Son of Sherman continues to dwindle. Rare indeed are author autographed copies. During the first week of August both myself and Pat Stansell, the author, will be in the same place (the IPMS convention) - a first in a number of years. If you would like to purchase a signed copy of the book and pick it up Thursday afternoon at the convention, click here. Please note - to get a signed copy you MUST order in advance by Monday 28 July. We only have so many books, and so much room, so we won't be taking cases of books with the idea that they can be signed as needed - this is advance purchase only. If you would like a signed copy but cannot attend the convention - drop us a note - but be sure to do so by this Sunday evening.
We have got a LOT of new and restocked publications in this week:
Dioramag 18
Air Modeller 121
PeKo
Tankograd, including their massive KV book
Kagero
Wings and Wheels Publicationis
Eagles over the Pacific
We are now stocking Key Publications - a series with numerous aviation and armor titles. I've not found the time to set up a brand-specific web page yet, but the books are listed in the various categories on our DavidDoyleBooks.com website.
For those of you who missed the announcement in last week's newsletter - we are excited to introduce a couple of new webpages on our site. First, we are building a special webpage for children's book - and secondly we've added a hobby newsstand page where all your favorite periodicals are collected, regardless of topic. As a result, some of your old bookmarks may no longer work. Be assured we still have all your favorite publications (and more) but you may need to browse through either the newsstand or children's section to find their new locations.
Finally, the moment many have been waiting for - our drawing for the brand new Tamiya M36....drum roll...the winner is Winston Gould! Winston, please drop us an email from the email address you used to register and we'll make arrangements to get your prize to you. If he does not claim his prize by July 22, we will draw again.
We are grateful for the continued support from all of you.
Sincerely,
David and Denise
